Traditionally (already in the Odyssey itself), Odysseus was thought to be so called because he was ‘hated by gods and men’, and the name derived from ancient Greek ὀδύσασθαι to hate (aorist middle) < the same Indo-European base as classical Latin odium odium n., but the true etymology of the word is unknown. Thus OED.
