This photo was taken at a barbecue for Contrast, a Black-run newspaper.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"block-2388cc25-b6d6-40d0-8202-f26d40b11d21\">Toronto Life magazine has <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/torontolife.com\/city\/joan-latchford-cardinal-gallery-photos-toronto-in-the-1960s-and-70s\/\" target=\"_blank\">a fantastic retrospective of Toronto in the 1960s and &#8217;70s<\/a>, courtesy of a photo collection from Joan Latchford &#8212; a former nun who left the convent in the UK where she spent seven years, and returned to Toronto and bought a Hasselblad camera:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cInstead of paying bills, of which I had a number, I decided I would get something that I really wanted, which was a good camera,\u201d she once said. She soon switched to a Leica, set up a darkroom in her basement, and started a photography career, knocking on magazine editors\u2019 doors to sell her images. Her clients included the CBC,&nbsp;<em>Chatelaine<\/em>&nbsp;and the National Film Board\u2019s stills division, which commissioned her to capture images of Toronto\u2019s Caribbean diaspora. After her death in 2017, she left behind around 40,000 negatives, which she\u2019d meticulously filed under categories like, \u201cMen,\u201d \u201cWomen,\u201d \u201cChildren,\u201d \u201cCelebrities\u201d and \u201cHumour.\u201d She also kept detailed notes: one of her phone books had B.B.
