{"id":2996,"date":"2008-10-15T20:55:57","date_gmt":"2008-10-16T00:55:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mathewingram.com\/work\/?p=2996"},"modified":"2008-10-15T20:55:57","modified_gmt":"2008-10-16T00:55:57","slug":"friendfeed-real-time-its-twitter-tastic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mathewingram.com\/work\/2008\/10\/15\/friendfeed-real-time-its-twitter-tastic\/","title":{"rendered":"FriendFeed real-time: It&#8217;s Twitter-tastic"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Just in time for the U.S. election, FriendFeed &#8212; the &#8220;life-streaming&#8221; aggregator run by former Google engineers Paul &#8220;Gmail&#8221; Buchheit and Bret Taylor &#8212; has <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.friendfeed.com\/2008\/10\/view-your-friendfeed-in-real-time.html\">launched a real-time view<\/a> that looks more than a little bit like Twitter, or like Twitter would if it had an auto-update feature (which it used to at one point, MG Siegler at VentureBeat <a href=\"http:\/\/venturebeat.com\/2008\/10\/15\/work-be-damned-friendfeed-now-has-an-area-that-updates-in-real-time\/\">points out<\/a>, until the strain on its servers made it turn the feature off). Like some others, I confess I find it a tad <a href=\"http:\/\/friendfeed.com\/e\/c8a60f66-a367-4358-b0a5-490ca554cd5c\/total-amount-of-time-until-friendfeed-real-time\/\">vertigo-inducing<\/a>, like watching the landscape rush past you on a train and trying to focus on individual objects. But for a small room with relatively few participants, I could see it being quite useful. More useful than Twitter? (assuming &#8220;useful&#8221; is a word you&#8217;re prepared to think of in association with Twitter) That&#8217;s hard to say.
