{"id":2628,"date":"2008-09-05T17:21:56","date_gmt":"2008-09-05T21:21:56","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mathewingram.com\/work\/?p=2628"},"modified":"2008-09-05T17:21:56","modified_gmt":"2008-09-05T21:21:56","slug":"how-many-searches-has-google-done","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mathewingram.com\/work\/2008\/09\/05\/how-many-searches-has-google-done\/","title":{"rendered":"How many searches has Google done?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Google&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/latimesblogs.latimes.com\/technology\/2008\/09\/marissa-mayer-t.html\">birthday<\/a> is coming up &#8212; although it&#8217;s not clear exactly which one, or when it will actually occur, for <a href=\"http:\/\/searchengineland.com\/070914-104722.php\">a whole pile of reasons<\/a> &#8212; and it occurred to me that the company must have done an awful lot of searches by now. After all, the most recent estimates I&#8217;ve seen are that Google processes more than 2 billion searches a day, although I have no way of knowing whether that&#8217;s true. So I started looking around for numbers and did some back-of-the-envelope calculations. <\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what I came up with (please keep in mind that I am an English major). If anyone can shed any further light on this &#8212; or fix the math &#8212; I&#8217;d appreciate it. Obviously, I had to make assumptions about what the average number of searches was during a year, based in some cases on nothing but a single number for that year, and I&#8217;m sure there are numerous other gaps of logic as well. Feel free to let fly with the suggestions, but try and remain civil.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n<strong>1998<\/strong>: 10,000 searches a day (Google official history)<br \/>\n<strong>1999<\/strong>: 500,000 searches a day (Britannica)<br \/>\n<strong>1999<\/strong> (September): 3 million a day (Google official history)<br \/>\n<strong>2000<\/strong>: 18 million searches a day (estimate)<br \/>\n<strong>2000<\/strong> (December): 100 million a day (Google official history)<br \/>\n<strong>2002<\/strong>: 150 million searches a day (estimate)<br \/>\n<strong>2004<\/strong>: 200 million searches a day (IPO figures)<br \/>\n<strong>2007<\/strong>: 1.2 billion a day (Clickz)<br \/>\n<strong>2008<\/strong>: 2 billion a day (estimates)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>which I roughed out to this:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>1998<\/strong>: about 3.6 million total that year<br \/>\n<strong>1999<\/strong>: 500,000 a day to 3 million a day, or about 500 million total<br \/>\n<strong>2000<\/strong>: 18 million a day to 100 million a day, or about 22 billion<br \/>\n<strong>2001<\/strong>: assume about 35 billion average<br \/>\n<strong>2002<\/strong>: 150 million a day, or about 54 billion<br \/>\n<strong>2003<\/strong>: assume about 65 billion<br \/>\n<strong>2004<\/strong>: 200 million a day, or about 73 billion<br \/>\n<strong>2005<\/strong>: assume about 100 billion<br \/>\n<strong>2006<\/strong>: assume about 250 billion<br \/>\n<strong>2007<\/strong>: 1.2 billion a day, or about 400 billion<br \/>\n<strong>2008<\/strong>: 2 billion a day, or about 700 billion<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>which gives you about 2 trillion searches. Still a long way to go before they get to a Googol worth, which is the number 1 followed by 100 zeroes.
