{"id":258706,"date":"2014-11-13T17:41:00","date_gmt":"2014-11-13T22:41:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mathewingram.com\/work\/?p=258706"},"modified":"2024-01-25T17:58:21","modified_gmt":"2024-01-25T22:58:21","slug":"you-can-make-a-living-from-a-thousand-true-fans-ben-thompson-is-proof","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mathewingram.com\/work\/2014\/11\/13\/you-can-make-a-living-from-a-thousand-true-fans-ben-thompson-is-proof\/","title":{"rendered":"You can make a living from a thousand true fans \u2014 Ben Thompson is proof"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/images-production.authory.com\/MathewIngram\/You-can-make-a-living-from-a-thousand-true-fans--Ben-Thompson-is-proof\/0d949fe0-7f40-11ea-b558-a94e482832ff.jpg?w=525&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier this year,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gigaom.com\/2014\/04\/17\/can-a-little-known-blogger-turn-his-site-into-a-business-by-selling-memberships-ben-thompson-is-sure-going-to-try\/\">I wrote about Ben Thompson<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 who writes about technology and strategy at a blog called Stratechery \u2014 and his decision to launch a membership-based paywall. At the time, I wondered whether someone without the kind of national following that Daring Fireball\u2019s John Gruber or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gigaom.com\/2014\/01\/03\/andrew-sullivan-looks-back-on-the-daily-dishs-performance-in-2013-and-talks-about-the-future\/\">The Daily Dish\u2019s Andrew Sullivan<\/a>\u00a0have would be able to make such a plan work. As it turns out, the answer is yes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a follow-up interview, Thompson told me that while there were some touch-and-go moments in the early days of his plan, the subscription part of his model has worked out far better than he ever hoped it would. Membership signups and the associated revenue have \u201cvastly exceeded my expectations,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Taiwan-based blogger,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/stratechery.com\/category\/about\/\">who previously worked<\/a>\u00a0as a product manager for companies like Apple and Microsoft, said that he was hoping to get about 500 members to sign up in the first year, and his most ambitious dream was that he might get a thousand \u2014 a goal that was based on veteran technology writer Kevin Kelly\u2019s advice about\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/kk.org\/thetechnium\/2008\/03\/1000-true-fans\/\">needing only \u201ca thousand true fans\u201d<\/a>\u00a0to survive as an independent artist. \u201dMy realistic goal was 500 in the first year, and my sort of crazy goal was to get a thousand \u2014 and I did that in the first six months. I\u2019ve actually gone quite a bit past that now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Direct to the reader<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those 1,000-plus members are paying $10 a month or $100 a year for access to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/stratechery.com\/membership\/\">what Thompson calls the Daily Update<\/a>, which is a collection of several posts with his take on or analysis of topical events \u2014 such as singer Taylor Swift removing her songs from Spotify and the implications for the music industry, or the future of the Uber car service. Members can access the content online, or via email, or through a private RSS feed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So Thompson will soon be bringing in over $100,000 from membership-based subscriptions, and has managed to get recommendations from fans like Gruber and Box CEO Aaron Levie along the way. He is now making the vast majority of his living from those memberships (although he also does some consulting on the side). He says he used to have sponsored posts, but they made up too large a proportion of the content \u2014 since he only posts a few items a day \u2014 and they involved too much administrative work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thompson also echoed something that Andrew Sullivan told me about his model at the Daily Dish, which is that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gigaom.com\/2014\/01\/03\/andrew-sullivan-looks-back-on-the-daily-dishs-performance-in-2013-and-talks-about-the-future\/\">he prefers to keep the relationship<\/a>\u00a0between himself and his readers as pure as possible \u2014 to feel as though he is working directly for them, and pleasing them is all that matters. \u201dI really like what it does for my incentives \u2014 my pay comes from my readers, so my job is to just deliver a kick-ass daily update every day and to write great stuff for the blog. What I like about it is it\u2019s very clear: it feels like people value what I have to say, so what you\u2019re getting if you subscribe is more of what I have to say.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since I wrote that initial post, Thompson says he has simplified the model even further, to the point where there is only one level \u2014 the $10 a month\/$100 a year level. In the beginning, he had three levels of support, including one that gave readers things like a T-shirt, as well as a higher level that cost $30 a month or $300 a year, and included private meetups and the ability to email Thompson directly and get advice or analysis. Those have been dropped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The internet is good for media<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The membership structure now is much simpler (those who had paid $300 were given the option of either a refund or a credit, or to donate the excess to Thompson \u2014 about 20 percent chose the latter, he said). But the blogger notes that without those initial members paying $300 for a year, he wouldn\u2019t have had the money in the bank with which to continue, or the confidence that he would be able to survive. \u201cThey were like my VC investors in a way,\u201d he said. \u201cI couldn\u2019t have done it without them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thompson said that while he is still making less than he did as a product manager at a tech company, he is making more than enough to live on, since his costs are so low. And that\u2019s one reason he wanted to talk about his success, he said \u2014 because it might encourage someone else to try it, and because it might help counter some of the prevailing narrative in the media world about&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/elitedaily.com\/money\/internet-killed-the-newspaper-star-the-slow-and-painful-death-of-print\/\">how the internet is going to be<\/a>&nbsp;the death of newspapers and therefore of serious writing or journalism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201dIt\u2019s striking to me how many people in the media only see the internet as a bogeyman, and completely fail to see the potential that it enables \u2014 what I\u2019m doing would be totally impossible without the internet. Yes, the world is going to look totally different than it did during the glory years of newspapers, but we have only scratched the surface of what\u2019s possible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As Thompson notes, he is not exactly getting rich from his blog, and whether he will still be able to make a living from it a year or two from now is unknown \u2014 but it is encouraging to see someone without a built-in national audience succeed with such a strategy, just as it\u2019s encouraging to see people like my friend Jesse Brown succeed&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/gigaom.com\/2014\/10\/08\/can-patreons-crowdfunding-platform-help-journalists-go-direct-jesse-brown-is-going-to-find-out\/\">at crowdfunding a podcast<\/a>, or see Contributoria&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/gigaom.com\/2013\/11\/15\/beyond-the-paywall-beacon-wants-to-make-it-easier-for-journalists-to-become-like-andrew-sullivan\/\">and Beacon<\/a>&nbsp;having some success with their direct-to-readers model.
