You can see other issues&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/when-the-going-gets-weird.ghost.io\/\">and sign up here<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Liberty Inn, the last <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/08\/10\/style\/hourly-rate-hotel-manhattan.html\">hourly rate hotel in Manhattan\u2019s meatpacking district<\/a>, bills its rooms as the \u201cmost sexiest\u201d in the city, and according to the New York Times, for nearly 50 years it has &#8220;provided sanctuary for bouts of afternoon passion, clandestine affairs and lunchtime quickies.&#8221; So when it was reported that it had been put on the market with hopes of fetching about $25 million, Alex Vadukul decided to check in, to bear witness to a kinky vestige of old New York before it was gone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" height=\"367\" width=\"525\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mathewingram.com\/work\/wp-content\/uploads\/screenshot_20220814-212517_nytimes7279349035877444352.jpg?resize=525%2C367&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-252398\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Reluctant Prophet of Effective Altruism<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Effective altruism,&#8221; which used to be a loose, Internet-enabled affiliation of the like-minded, is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2022\/08\/15\/the-reluctant-prophet-of-effective-altruism\">now a broadly influential faction<\/a>, especially in Silicon Valley, and controls philanthropic resources worth about $30 billion. Though William MacAskill is only one of the movement\u2019s principal leaders, &#8220;his conspicuous integrity and easygoing charisma have made him a natural candidate for head boy,&#8221; says the New Yorker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mathewingram.com\/work\/wp-content\/uploads\/image_editor_output_image-956072073-16605292534632877048650718142180.jpg?w=525&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-252406\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Spanish town whose residents are descended from Japanese samurai<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Approximately 650 residents of Coria del Rio, a small Spanish town near Seville,  use the surname Jap\u00f3n (originally Hasekura de Jap\u00f3n), because they are <a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Coria_del_R%C3%ADo\">descendants of six samurai<\/a> who visited the region as part of the first official Japanese delegation to Spain, in the 1600s. Hasekura Tsunenaga, whose statue sits in the town square, led the delegation as they visited the Spanish court of King Philip III and the Vatican, and then established an embassy. According to the Daily Beast, &#8220;someday soon, they think Donald Trump will defeat the cabal that controls the world and release med beds to the public, bringing on a new era free of illness.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/mathewingram.com\/work\/wp-content\/uploads\/screenshot_20220814-215402_chrome7312400973315830203.jpg?w=525&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-252402\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How a Phoenix record store owner set the audiophile world on fire<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mike Esposito still won\u2019t say who gave him the tip about the records.
