The Ballard woman &#8212; who captured hearts and admirers around the world when she stubbornly turned down $1 million to sell her home to make way for a commercial development &#8212; died Sunday of pancreatic cancer. She was 86.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mathewingram.com\/work\/wp-content\/uploads\/515e1a0879017672fc9284640bbaf38a.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.mathewingram.com\/work\/wp-content\/uploads\/515e1a0879017672fc9284640bbaf38a-300x200.jpg?resize=300%2C200\" alt=\"\" title=\"edithmacefield\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2503\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>According to the Seattle PI story, Barry Martin &#8212; the senior superintendent in charge of building the giant parking garage around her house &#8212; <a href=\"http:\/\/seattlepi.nwsource.com\/local\/367335_obitmacefield18.html\">struck up a friendship<\/a> with Ms. Macefield, and used to drive her to the doctor, pick up her groceries and prescriptions, bring her lunch and even cooked her dinner from time to time.
