{"id":2171,"date":"2008-01-30T23:55:24","date_gmt":"2008-01-31T04:55:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mathewingram.com\/work\/2008\/01\/30\/twitter-as-news-delivery-system\/"},"modified":"2008-01-30T23:55:24","modified_gmt":"2008-01-31T04:55:24","slug":"twitter-as-news-delivery-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mathewingram.com\/work\/2008\/01\/30\/twitter-as-news-delivery-system\/","title":{"rendered":"Twitter as news delivery system"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Patrick Ruffini at Tech President has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.techpresident.com\/blog\/entry\/20767\/the_year_of_twitter\">a great post<\/a> about Twitter starting to become a news-delivery system, a post I came across because it was linked to by Josh Catone over at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.readwriteweb.com\/archives\/the_rise_of_twitter_as_a_platform_for_serious_discourse.php\">Read\/Write Web<\/a>, who says Twitter is becoming a &#8220;platform for serious discourse.&#8221; Not all of what we see on Twitter is serious discourse, mind you &#8212; there are still people who insist on telling me everything they&#8217;re doing (yes, I&#8217;m talking about you, Scoble) and there are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lastpodcast.net\/2008\/01\/30\/another-day-another-twitter-outage\/\">performance issues<\/a>, but Patrick and Josh both have a point.<\/p>\n<p>Like Patrick, and probably lots of other people, I started noticing Twitter becoming a news-delivery system when a news event came along &#8212; like the fires in California, or the death of Heath Ledger &#8212; and probably noticed it the most during the U.S. primaries. The volume of Twitter posts during the debates and the voting was incredible, and it was like a front-row seat to the action, or a really <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ipdemocracy.com\/archives\/2008\/01\/31\/#002861\">smart water-cooler<\/a> discussion. Some people were watching CNN, some watching other shows, some were at actual events; it was a sea of information and opinion.<\/p>\n<p>Josh has <a href=\"http:\/\/www.readwriteweb.com\/archives\/the_rise_of_twitter_as_a_platform_for_serious_discourse.php\">a great rundown<\/a> of why Twitter works for news, including the fact that it&#8217;s fast, it&#8217;s open, and it&#8217;s two-way &#8212; and Patrick makes many of the same points. Like Mitch Joel, I have <a href=\"http:\/\/www.twistimage.com\/blog\/archives\/tnn-twitter-news-network-or-how-i-found-out-about-the-google-feedburner-acquisition\/\">found out about<\/a> news events through Twitter, including several takeovers, financial results and other stories. And journalists are taking note, including <a href=\"http:\/\/www.poynter.org\/column.asp?id=31&amp;aid=133274\">Steve Outing<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jacklail.com\/blog\/archives\/2007\/11\/this-just-in.html\">Jack Lail<\/a>, as well as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.lunchoverip.com\/2008\/01\/using-twitter-i.html\">Bruno Giussani<\/a>. Newspapers are feeding their news alerts straight to Twitter, and reporters are starting to do likewise.
