It will be interesting to see what kind of reaction Google gets to the super-duper, Google-rific DRM built into the search company&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.google.com\/press\/pressrel\/video_marketplace.html\">new video store<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>As more than one person has pointed out, the last thing we really need is another form of DRM, what with Sony <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sysinternals.com\/blog\/2005\/10\/sony-rootkits-and-digital-rights.html\">installing rootkits<\/a> and Apple handcuffing you three different ways when you shop at iTunes.com. Google founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin are famous for their mantra &#8220;Don&#8217;t be evil&#8221; &#8212; and yet, for many, DRM is <a href=\"http:\/\/mutednoise.com\/phpbb2\/viewtopic.php?t=1879\">synonymous with evil<\/a> (some interesting comments on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.digg.com\/security\/Google_DRM\">this Digg post<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/techdirt.com\/articles\/20060106\/1634220_F.shtml\">If it is evil<\/a>, is it a necessary evil? Can Google manage to convince everyone that its DRM is somehow <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ipdemocracy.com\/archives\/2006\/01\/05\/index.php#a000974\">the lesser<\/a> of several evils? Sure, many of us &#8212; like <a href=\"http:\/\/avc.blogs.com\/a_vc\/2006\/01\/google_drm_an_o.html\">Fred Wilson<\/a> &#8212; are crying a little on the inside. But do most people just care about having the ability to download NBA games or that great Star Trek episode with the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Orion_slave_girls\">green dancing alien girl<\/a>, at the right price, without giving a rat&#8217;s behind about the DRM?<\/p>\n<div class=\"syndication-links\"><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Do regular users care about DRM &#8212; digital rights management &#8212; or is it just open-source fans, libertarians and other geeks?
