{"id":1376,"date":"2007-06-05T17:40:03","date_gmt":"2007-06-05T21:40:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mathewingram.com\/work\/2007\/06\/05\/yahoo-says-search-is-over-it-hopes\/"},"modified":"2007-06-05T17:40:03","modified_gmt":"2007-06-05T21:40:03","slug":"yahoo-says-search-is-over-it-hopes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mathewingram.com\/work\/2007\/06\/05\/yahoo-says-search-is-over-it-hopes\/","title":{"rendered":"Yahoo says search is over \u2014 it hopes"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>My friend Tony Hung from Deep Jive Interests &#8212; who was a one-man live-blogging machine at our recent <a href=\"http:\/\/www.meshconference.com\">mesh conference<\/a>, as well as being on a panel (about the future of journalism, coincidentally enough) &#8212; has a great post about Yahoo&#8217;s sudden realization that <a href=\"http:\/\/technology.timesonline.co.uk\/tol\/news\/tech_and_web\/the_web\/article1883175.ece\">search isn&#8217;t all that important<\/a> any more. If those comments sound like sour grapes to you, you&#8217;re not the only one.<\/p>\n<p>Tony&#8217;s point is that Yahoo is talking about how &#8220;personalization&#8221; is the future, rather than pure search, and to him (and me) that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.deepjiveinterests.com\/2007\/06\/05\/yahoo-search-is-history-translation-we-should-have-bought-facebook-when-we-had-the-chance\/\">sounds a lot like<\/a> what social networks such as Facebook do. So does Yahoo wish they had coughed up the <a href=\"http:\/\/mashable.com\/2006\/09\/21\/facebook-to-sell-to-yahoo-for-1-billion\/\">$1-billion<\/a> or whatever it was to buy Facebook when they had the chance? I expect they do. Imagine how thrilled they will be when Google does a deal to drive the search inside Facebook (not that I know anything, but I could see it happening at some point).<\/p>\n<p>Go read Tony&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.deepjiveinterests.com\/2007\/06\/05\/yahoo-search-is-history-translation-we-should-have-bought-facebook-when-we-had-the-chance\/\">whole post<\/a>.
