This reminds me of my long-running arguments with my geekier friends who hate sports. Sports is a big waste of time, they say. And instead, they spend their time catching up on Battlestar Galactica and playing World of Warcraft. Reverse snobbery, I say...

By the way, I'm reading Shirky's book Here Comes Everybody and it ties in nicely with a lot of what you've been writing about (ie. newspapers migrating to being exclusively online, the Long Tail and the power law, etc.)

I always wonder why people rag on Denton for his pay-per-views salary system. You can damn well bet that if newspapers could figure out a way to pay reporters based on how many readers their stories bring in, they'd have done it yesterday. Even the most noble public service journalists pay a hell of a lot of attention to reader/audience figures, although often it's more sophisticated than a simple hit count. I don't see why we have to pretend that the number of people reading our stuff doesn't matter.

Mathew, If you haven't already, take a look at what the ontario government is doing with their press releases. They have abandoned the traditional format, and are halfway to something neat.

Mathew

Its good to see a writer and journalist placing the empahsis on the importance of links. I spend my working day preaching the power of linking in the marketing to journalists and publishers. Few really take it on board. Here is a list of over 100 ways of getting inbound links.

Thanks

I like the idea of a dream team, although I think CNet is too low a target. The original dream team were world champions. They won the olympic gold decisively. So what would the appropriate target be? Does the dream team take on the NY Times? Ok, too general. Wired? Who's number one, and that's who the dream team needs to gun for.
