Excellent examples -- there seems to be three stages to "breaking news" online: 1) the alert bulletin, 2) the fleshed out story, and 3) the polished version. But too often, the gap between 1 and 2 is ridiculously long.

There's no reason why quick updates (be they new information or background) can't be constantly added as the story unfolds. Doing so will better inform the reader, and (from the biz side) draw more (both in amount and frequency) visits.
